University Hospitals Welcomes Phillip Chang, MD as Chief Medical Officer of UH Cleveland Medical Center
March 2020 – After an extensive, nationwide search conducted by Summit Talent Group, University Hospitals in Cleveland, OH has named Phillip Chang, MD, MBA as Chief Medical Officer of UH Cleveland Medical Center (CMC).
Part of the 18-hospital University Hospitals Health System, UH CMC is the flagship of University Hospitals with 1,032-beds serving as a tertiary medical center, is an affiliate of Case Western Reserve University and includes UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and UH Seidman Cancer Center, part of National Cancer Institute-designated Case Comprehensive Cancer Centers.
Dr. Chang will serve as a member of the UH CMC Senior Management team, working in partnership with the UH CMC COO and the UH CMO, in providing leadership for the department Chairs and hospital medical staff; an integral role in ensuring the delivery and transition of patient care as well as service excellence.
Dr. Chang joins University hospitals from his previous position as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at University of Kentucky Health (UK Healthcare). While at UK HealthCare, Dr. Chang has focused on combating the opioid crisis, including setting new protocols at the health system for providers, which sent patients home with 50% less opioids. Along with serving as CMO, Dr. Chang was on the Ambulatory Oversight Committee, Executive Finance Committee and Executive Management Committee at UK HealthCare. Dr. Chang joined UK HealthCare’s surgical faculty in 2005 and from 2013 to 2016 he served as an operating room medical director.
By training Dr. Chang is a Board Certified Critical Care and Trauma Surgeon. He attended William & Mary and earned a Bachelor Degree in Mathematics, then earned his Doctor of Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He went to University of Kentucky for his residency and fellowship and also earned a Master of Business Administration while serving at University of Kentucky.
