Description
In this challenging and rewarding position, the Unit Director maintains 24-hour accountability for leading and managing the assigned area to ensure an outstanding experience for patients and employees by continuously improving the quality of patient care, creating a healthy workplace for staff, and overseeing clinical and administrative/business functions.
Reporting to the Director Nursing Operations, the Unit Director will be responsible for leading a team of 70 staff members, including RNs, LPNs, and PRNs. The unit is supported by a dedicated educator for ongoing staff development, new staff orientation, and maintaining best practices established as part of UPMC Magee Women’s. The team also maintains cross-training of all nurses to handle various roles within the unit (labor to nursery to NICU), ensuring versatility and team cohesion.
This role offers the chance to lead a cultural and operational transformation within the T9 Birth Center. With strong physician support from Magee Women’s and a dedicated educator, the Unit Director will have the resources and authority needed to drive impactful changes in clinical care, staffing, and patient experience. The candidate will also be instrumental in improving outcomes including those related to induction scheduling, delivery timeliness, and C-section reduction. About UPMC Altoona Birthing Center (T9):
T9 is a 22-bed multidisciplinary unit that contains its own triage and Operating Rooms. Patients labor, birth, recover and have their postpartum stay in the same unit permitting continuity of patient care throughout their hospital stay promoting skin to skin, support of breastfeeding, delayed bathing, and infant rooming-in. Within the unit is a 4-bed triage area for maternal monitoring of baby, and evaluation of emergent obstetrical situations and concerns. Nurses are trained in labor and delivery, how to circulate in the OR for cesarean sections, care of the infant and mother postpartum, triaging patients, and neonatal resuscitation after delivery. Neonates may need to transition into the 8-bed special care nursery, currently caring for neonates 35 weeks and greater. UPMC Altoona delivers approximately 1500 babies per year and is one of only 45 hospitals in PA to achieve the Keystone 10 designation, a quality improvement breastfeeding initiative aimed at improving the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding for all Pennsylvania infants, mothers and families

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
