OVERVIEW

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Clinical Director to lead and manage the daily operations of OB services. The Clinical Director is accountable for creating a culture of patient safety and establishing an environment that supports clear, effective communication which fosters engagement, and shared accountability between disciplines.

This position reports directly to the Chief Nursing Officer & VP Patient Care Services at UPMC Magee and collaborates in a dyad leadership model with multiple Medical Directors throughout the Obstetrics Service line.  There are six Unit Directors who are responsible for designated service lines and are direct reports to this position, they oversee approximately 450 staff members.

• 28-bed high risk Antepartum unit (1 unit director)
• 22 bed labor/delivery, 5 OR rooms, PACU, OB emergency with 15 triage bays, & 6 bed ICU (totaling 20,00sq ft) (2-unit director)
• 56 bed mother/baby unit (2-unit directors)
• 20 bed high risk postpartum unit (1 unit director)

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Ensure a culture of caring by promoting and supporting decisions that are patient centered and within the framework of Relationship Based Care.
• Apply critical thinking skills to address complex, high-risk problems and translate them into opportunities and devise solutions to improve clinical outcomes, eliminate duplication and maximize efficiency
• In partnership with Medical Director OB Services, set clinical quality priorities, recommend and lead evidence based clinical practice changes to achieve the highest standards of quality and safety.
• Conduct an analysis of areas of responsibilities, including strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats to define proactive processes and shares this information with the Vice President of Patient Care Services and Medical Director OB Services for development of an organizational strategic plan.
• Continuously monitor & evaluate clinical systems and processes to ensure delivery of comprehensive patient/family care across the continuum.
• Utilize financial and quality data as well as conceptual and didactic knowledge in the development of the service line / program vision and operational plan.
• Demonstrate continuous improvement in patient, caregiver and physician satisfaction. Achieve outcomes of the organization in relation to core measures, regulatory influences, pay for performance, HCAPS, staff and customer satisfaction
• Support a shared governance model, facilitate staff involvement in decision making, promote the ongoing development of the Professional Practice Council, peer-to-peer accountability.
• Demonstrate ongoing departmental and personal development, coaches and advise direct reports and professional staff in the formulation of their professional development plan.
• Prepare, monitor, and achieve budgeted annual man-hours, expense and capital budget for responsible cost centers based on an analysis of needs of patients, clinical programs, staff and physicians.
• Direct program teams to function within scope of practice as defined by clinical discipline and job description.
• Identifies appropriate risk assessment strategies and leads risk reduction strategies within service line.
• Participate in professional organizations to enhance personal growth and facilitate collaborative relationships at a regional, national and international level.
• Identifies and participates in research activities.
• Assume a leadership role in the establishment of liaisons, networks and/or acquisition of resources to facilitate the growth and development of programs within the system and the community.

QUALIFICATIONS

• BSN required
• Master’s degree in nursing or related health care field required, either at time of hire, or must be enrolled in a program within one year of hire and completed within three years of enrollment
• Pennsylvania RN license or a multistate license issued by a participating Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Five years of progressively responsible clinical experience in OB Services, including supervision and leadership
• Previous experience managing Labor and Delivery services preferred in a high-volume, high acuity setting.
