Douglas Apple Selected as Chief Clinical Officer for Bon Secours Mercy Health’s Atlantic Group

June 24, 2019 – Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) has filled the position of Chief Clinical Officer for their Atlantic Group. Partnering with the executive search firm Summit Talent Group, BSMH selected Douglas Apple, MD to assume the role.

In his new role, Dr. Apple serves as the executive leader over clinical strategy and operations for the Atlantic Group and its Markets. The Atlantic Group is headquartered in Marriottsville, MD and is comprised of Markets throughout Maryland, South Carolina, Florida, Virginia, and New York. Ultimately, Dr. Apple will have clinical oversight for more than 1,300 clinicians in the Market facilities.

Before joining BSMH, Dr. Apple spent over a decade with Spectrum Health and Spectrum Medical Group in Michigan where he held multiple roles with increasing responsibility. Most recently, Dr. Apple has served as the Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President for the Spectrum Health Delivery System. In this role, Dr. Apple established a matrixed system between 12 hospitals with nine independent medical staffs and the employed medical group. Dr. Apple championed for standardization, communication, and cooperation whilst prioritizing quality and safety and ensuring provider engagement and satisfaction.

In May, the Health Management Academy honored Dr. Apple with the GE Physician Fellow. The two-year fellowship is designed to develop critical skills and strategic perspectives necessary to lead effectively, skills that will be invaluable in his new position. Dr. Apple attended Saba University Medical School of Medicine before completing his residency in internal medicine at Michigan State University. Prior to his medical education, Dr. Apple received a Bachelor of Science in biomedical science from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI.

In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Apple has been recognized with Spectrum Health’s Synergy Award in 2011, 2013, and 2015. Additionally, he was awarded the American College of Physicians Hospitalist Top Docs Award for 2008. He is a member of multiple professional organizations including the American College of Physicians, the Society of Hospital Medicine, and the American Association for Physician Leadership.
