Because St. Vincents is a part of Ascension, the largest not-for-profit hospital system in the US and the world’s largest Catholic health system, they were particularly concerned with governance models, in particular, looking to reduce operating costs.
It was of the utmost importance to identify candidates who would be prepared to work to centralize traditional finance functions (for example general accounting, payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable) and go beyond traditional finance standardization, taking an enterprise approach to revenue cycle and the niche areas of financial specialization such as treasury, tax and government reimbursement.
The role of “regional” Chief Financial Officer is truly a non-traditional role as it has evolved into a strategic role of performance improvement, business development, return on capital investment and predictive analytics, in partnership with operations leaders.
The new Chief Financial Officer needed to be able to significantly boost revenues through program growth, acquisitions and partnerships, and contract negotiations and to immediately come in and set up programs to improve revenue capture; reform leadership culture to focus on growth, efficiency, and data-driven decision making.
